Carmelo Anthony Said to Agree to Re-Sign With the Knicks

Nine months of nearly daily speculation about Carmelo Anthony’s future came to an end Saturday when Anthony agreed to re-sign with the Knicks, according to a person with firsthand knowledge of the negotiations.

Anthony, one of the N.B.A.’s elite scorers, made his decision one day after LeBron James sent tremors across the league by agreeing to return to the Cleveland Cavaliers. The two players were the top free agents on the market this summer, with the ability to alter the landscape of the league depending on where each wanted to play.

It was not immediately clear if Anthony had signed a contract, or what the terms of a new deal were. By agreeing to return — a move first reported by The Daily News and Yahoo — Anthony positions himself as the cornerstone of the franchise for years to come.

“It seems like at least in these last few hours, it’s gotten closer to sounding like Carmelo will be rejoining our team,” said Derek Fisher, the Knicks’ recently hired coach. “That’s obviously great news.”

Anthony was eligible for a contract from the Knicks that would pay him nearly $130 million over five years, more than any other team could offer, according to league rules. Any long-term deal approaching that amount of money would come fraught with risk, though. Anthony, 30, is banking on the notion that Phil Jackson, the team president, can help turn the Knicks, one of the league’s perennial underperformers, into a contender with the clock ticking on Anthony’s career.

The Knicks, too, are making a substantial investment in a player who has not always elevated the play of his team. Anthony, an elite scorer and a seven-time All-Star, has appeared in 13 playoff series over the course of his 11-year career, with his team winning just three of them.

Late last month, Anthony opted out of the final two years of a contract that would have paid him more than $23 million next season. He became a free agent on July 1 and was courted by several teams, including the Chicago Bulls. Now, after days of deliberating, he has decided to stay put.
Tim Hardaway Jr., a guard with the Knicks, said he had exchanged text messages with Anthony and was happy he was returning. Kenyon Martin, a free agent who played for the Knicks last season, said he was not surprised to learn that Anthony was re-signing with the team.

“He wants to win a championship in New York,” Martin said before the Knicks’ summer league team faced the Portland Trail Blazers.

Though Jackson declined to discuss the Anthony negotiations in detail on Saturday, saying little more than, “We’ll wait; we’ll be there,” last week he was optimistic about Anthony’s remaining with the team, saying that he felt “really good” about the meeting he had with Anthony in Los Angeles on July 3.

“We really struck a chord,” Jackson said Thursday. “The two of us, I think, feel really passionately about what we’re trying to get accomplished.”

Last season, Anthony assembled one of the finest statistical seasons of his career. He averaged 27.4 points and a career-best 8.1 rebounds while playing 38.7 minutes per game, the most in the league. Yet the Knicks finished with a 37-45 record, out of the playoffs in the weak Eastern Conference.

The team was hindered by injuries, and Mike Woodson, who was dismissed as coach after the season, made a series of questionable decisions. But even before the season, Anthony had stated his desire to test free agency — a story line that ballooned into a distraction, overshadowing a season that quickly turned sour.

As a free agent for the first time in his career, Anthony embarked on a three-day, four-city tour of potential destinations. The Bulls pitched him on joining Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah, potentially forming an elite threesome that could vie for championships. It was much the same message from the Houston Rockets, with Dwight Howard and James Harden in the fold. Anthony also visited with Mark Cuban, the owner of the Dallas Mavericks, before meeting with officials from the Los Angeles Lakers.

Before he began the process, Anthony emphasized that winning was most important to him at this stage of the career. So the Bulls figured to be a favorite for his services. They would have been a ready-made contender with Anthony, but one problem was money: They could not offer as much as the Knicks, as they were restricted by the collective bargaining agreement and by their payroll.

Barring a sign-and-trade deal, which would have required Jackson’s cooperation, the Bulls could offer Anthony only a contract worth a little more than $70 million over four years.
Ultimately, the Knicks still proved to have the most allure, and the most available cash, for Anthony, who met with Jackson and other team officials after his meeting with the Lakers. In the end, Anthony, who has a home in Los Angeles, took more than a week to weigh his options before settling on a return to New York.

Jackson had been making moves that he hoped would appeal to Anthony and the rest of the team’s players, hiring Fisher as coach (after losing out on his first choice, Steve Kerr, who went to Golden State). Jackson also acquired the veteran point guard Jose Calderon in a trade with the Mavericks. In Calderon, the Knicks have a player who is pass-first, a quality that appeals to the offense-minded Anthony.

The Knicks could endure some growing pains in the upcoming season, even with Anthony in the fold — a reality that Jackson has gone out of his way to acknowledge. But they will have salary-cap space in 2015, and Jackson has been targeting that period as his first real opportunity to chase free agents who could join Anthony.

There will be questions, of course, without many guarantees. Will Anthony buy into Jackson’s renowned triangle offense? Will Fisher be able to navigate the choppy waters of the N.B.A. in his first season as a coach, at any level? Will the team’s complementary parts — Iman Shumpert and J. R. Smith among them — play at a more consistent level than they did last season?

There are also concerns about Anthony’s durability. He has absorbed plenty of contact in his career, a product of his playing style as much as anything else. He will be 35 by the end of his new deal, well past the age when most elite players see their skills begin to diminish. Consider Dwyane Wade, 32, whose troublesome knees slowed him considerably in recent seasons, which may have played a small role in James’s departure from the Miami Heat.

However, it was money, not age, that seemed to make Jackson reluctant to initially offer Anthony a maximum contract because, he said, it would limit the team’s financial flexibility moving forward. He publicly challenged Anthony to take less, pointing out that it was Anthony himself who, in February, had raised the idea of taking a pay cut from James L. Dolan, the team’s owner, if it would help “build something stronger.”

In the end, Anthony appeared to get the deal he wanted, and the Knicks held onto one of the elite scorers in the game. For both sides, it was a marriage worth saving.

Brazil vs. Netherlands: Final score 0-3, Oranje comfortably win 3rd-place playoff

Robert Cianflone
Brazil's World Cup ends in a whimper with a 3-0 loss to the Netherlands in the third-place game.
The Netherlands cruised past Brazil, 3-0 in Saturday's World Cup third-place playoff in Brasília. The Oranje scored twice early in the first half and comfortably withstood the ensuing pressure from the impotent hosts before adding a third late in the game.

If this was supposed to be a chance for the Seleção to reclaim some respect after being humiliated by Germany in the semifinal, it will go down as a missed opportunity.

It took the Netherlands only three minutes to break the deadlock, with Robin van Persie netting from the penalty spot after Arjen Robben was tugged down by Thiago Silva. The incident appeared to occur outside of the box, though a spot-kick was awarded and the defender escaped with only a yellow card.

Brazil responded by bombarding the Dutch box with crosses, though they were almost invariably gobbled up by the Oranje center backs.

At the other end, Brazil's defensive woes continued. The Netherlands doubled their advantage in the 17th minute, when Daley Blind collected a David Luiz knockdown inside the box and calmly dispatched his shot into the roof of Júlio César's net.

From then until the break, the Netherlands were cruising. Brazil didn't capitulate as they did against Germany, but they never looked like getting back in the game after going down two. Their best chance of the half came just over five minutes before the interval, though Oscar's driven free kick flashed wide off the head of Luiz Gustavo.

The hosts didn't look much better after the restart. They still struggled to convert their possession into goalscoring chances, and failed to seriously test Dutch goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen. Ramires wriggled into space on the edge of the box just short of the hour, though he dragged his shot wide of the far post.

Brazil should have at least had some joy with just over 20 minutes left, when Oscar was clearly tripped in the penalty area by Blind. However, the referee again made the wrong call and booked the attacker for simulation.

The Netherlands capitalized to score a third in the first minute of stoppage time, when substitute Daryl Janmaat jinked down the right and laid on an assist for Georginio Wijnaldum in the box. A miserable World Cup campaign ended on a fittingly bad note for the Seleção.

Brazil: César; Maxwell, Silva, Luiz, Maicon; Gustavo (Fernandinho 46'), Paulinho (Hernanes 57'); Willian, Oscar, Ramires (Hulk 73'); Jô.
Goals: None.

Netherlands: Cillessen (Vorm 90+3'); Martins Indi, Vlaar, de Vrij; Blind (Janmaat 70'), Clasie (Veltman 90'), Wijnaldum, Kuyt; de Guzmán; Robben, van Persie.
Goals: van Persie (pen. 3'), Blind (17'), Wijnaldum (90+1')

Tommy Ramone Dies at 65; He Gave Punk Rock Its Pulse

Tom Erdelyi, better known as Tommy Ramone, the founding drummer and last surviving original member of the Ramones, the New York City band whose dizzying, short blasts of melody codified the sound of punk rock, died on Friday at his home in Ridgewood, Queens. He was 65.

The cause was cancer of the bile duct, his family said. Of the original Ramones, Joey (the singer) died in 2001, Dee Dee (the bassist) in 2002 and Johnny (the guitarist) in 2004.

Mr. Erdelyi played only on the band’s first three albums, “Ramones” in 1976 and “Leave Home” and “Rocket to Russia,” both from 1977. And he cut a much more easygoing figure than his bandmates, who despite their fraternal stage names were notorious for internecine feuds. Yet Mr. Erdelyi played a crucial role in the sound and early development of the band, which was started by the high school friends from Forest Hills, Queens.

When the group first came together in 1974, Mr. Erdelyi, who had some experience in the music business as a recording engineer, was the manager. Equally in love with hard rock’s buzz-saw guitar and the sunny clarity of 1950s and ’60s radio pop, the four men, dressed in leather jackets and ripped jeans like B-movie juvenile delinquents, opposed the mellow singer-songwriters and opulent progressive rock that dominated pop at the time.

In the band’s earliest incarnation, Joey — real name Jeffrey Hyman — was the drummer. But once it was discovered that Joey had the most capable singing voice, he moved to lead vocals.

“We started auditioning drummers, but they just couldn’t grasp the concept of the band — the speed and simplicity,” Mr. Erdelyi said in a 2011 interview with the website Noisecreep. “So I’d sit down and show them what we were looking for and the guys just finally said, ‘Why don’t you do it?’ So I gave it a try and that’s when the sound of the band sort of solidified.”
In songs like “Beat on the Brat” and “Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue,” the nascent Ramones compressed nursery-rhyme chords into adrenalized blares, and seemed to satirize the very ideas of teenage boredom and cheap kicks. Playing regularly at the East Village bar CBGB, the band charged through the set, pausing long enough between songs only for Dee Dee to shout, “One, two, three, four!”

Official songwriting credits were shared by the full band. But Mr. Erdelyi was the primary author of several of the Ramones’ early classics, including “Blitzkrieg Bop,” which opens their first album with the chant “Hey ho, let’s go!” and features lyrics that boil teenage angst down to its most basic and kinetic:
What they want, I don’t know
They’re all revved up and ready to go
He was born Erdelyi Tamas on Jan. 29, 1949, in Budapest. His parents were professional photographers. Most of the rest of his family died in the Holocaust, he recalled in Steven Lee Beeber’s 2006 book, “The Heebie-Jeebies at CBGB’s: A Secret History of Jewish Punk.”

He immigrated with his family to the United States in 1957 and changed his name to Thomas Erdelyi. In high school, he played guitar in a garage band called Tangerine Puppets with a schoolmate, John Cummings — the future Johnny Ramone.

cording engineer and worked at the Record Plant studio in Manhattan. He was associate producer of the Ramones’ first album, which was produced by Craig Leon, and he was a co-producer of the band’s next three records. Mr. Erdelyi left the band after “Rocket to Russia,” released in 1977, to concentrate on producing. He was replaced on the drums by Marc Bell, who took on the name Marky Ramone.

Mr. Erdelyi produced the Replacements’ “Tim” in 1985 and Redd Kross’ “Neurotica” in 1987. With Ed Stasium, he also produced the Ramones’ 1979 live album, “It’s Alive” — recorded in 1977 when Mr. Erdelyi was still with the band — and “Too Tough to Die” in 1984.
In the 2000s Mr. Erdelyi and his longtime companion, Claudia Tienan, performed bluegrass-style music as the duo Uncle Monk, releasing a self-titled album on their own label, Airday. Ms. Tienan survives him, as does a brother, Peter.

The Ramones, who were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002, were a quintessential rock group whose influence far exceeded record sales.

The group’s self-titled debut, which Rolling Stone magazine has ranked the 33rd greatest album of all time, peaked at No. 111 on Billboard’s album chart. In April, 38 years after its release, it was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America, recognizing that it had finally sold at least 500,000 copies.
